A Conference of Greek Philosophers
Topic: Ancient Greek Philosophy
Directed by Emily F. , Written by Nathan P. , Edited by Zach F.
Starring Calvin F., Kate W., Gia B., Avery W.
“One thing I know, that I know nothing. This is the source of my wisdom.” - Socrates. Greece was a major influence on its past and present, as well as on the world. They influenced things like art, government, architecture, sports, literature, and sciences. But Greece is infamously known for its famous philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and many more. But one of the most iconic and memorable theories from a philosopher(s) was the origins of the Flat Earth theory. The origins of this belief were traced back to Ancient Greece. It was believed by the Pre-Socratics, one of the few groups in the city-state, that the Earth was flat.
One of the Pre-Socratic philosophers was Thales. He was the first to question the basic elements of the universe and stated that the first cause of the world was water. He also was the first to ignore the supernatural reason of the creation of the world and focus on the observable world and rational thoughts. Another Pre-Socratic philosopher was Democritus. He was the creator of the formulation of an atomic theory of the universe. Which is the theory that everything is made up of atoms, which became a major influence on modern science today. Democritus was taught by Leucippus, the man who was one of the first to believe in the science of atoms. Democritus’ teacher was a man to accept the idea of a flat earth. With Democritus following in his footsteps also accepting a flat earth but with little modifications to the theory. These theorists made many influences on modern science today and left a major mark on history.
Our film talks about a time traveling character, Elizabeth, who finds her way to a conference of several Greek Philosophers. She begins to talk to the other philosophers, and admires their works. But then, out of nowhere, another philosopher, Aristotle, disrupts everyone else, and yells that the earth is round. From a creative standpoint, we decided to make the film hilarious, by tying in recent conspiracy theories, such as the earth once again being called flat. We also intentionally used the line “fake news”, since false news, or claimed-to-be false news is common and relatable. Through this, as well as the exaggeration of anger from Aristotle, and the pouring of water on a bowl, made this film hilarious.
