The Cheesiest Debate
Topic: Fidel Castro and Andre Voisin Argument Over Cheese
Directed by Clara S. , Written by Madison Y. , Edited by Jade K.
Starring Aiden G., Aeralyn S., Jackson B., Maritza C.
Fidel Castro, born in 1926, was a Cuban president from 1976-2008, who was also obsessed with cheese. We researched about his dictatorship, life in Cuba while he was president, assassinations, and his obsession for cheese. We came to find a fight between Fidel and a french ambassador named André Voisin (they fought on which cheese was better). André came to Cuba to help update their farming system, but Fidel decided that he needed to prove to André that Cuban cheese was better than French cheese.
We decided to use Fidel Castro’s dairy obsession as the base of our film. There we many different stories about it over the years from assassination attempts, to super cows. We decided to base our film around an argument Fidel got into with a french ambassador named Andre Voisin, and the recorded conversation between them. Here is the overview of the actual conversation:
Voisin: Not too Bad
Castro insisted it was identical to the french cheese
Voisin: Well yes
Voisin takes another bite
Voisin: Not bad. Not bad. It’s like the French.
Castro: Better than the French? Yes or No?
Voisin: Better? Never!
Castro refused to believe there was a better cheese than his
Castro: You have to agree it’s better!
Voisin grabs a cigar from Castor’s breast pocket
Voisin: Will you agree that there is a better cigar in the world than this?
Voisin: You can’t beat tradition
Voisin: My cheese and your cigars have centuries of experience behind them.
The argument was smoothed over. That’s how it went. However we decided to go in a different direction and look at the cheese itself to see their reaction to the argument and their reasoning for being better. And since they were fighting about popularity we decided to have another very popular cheese join the fray. We brought in swiss cheese since it’s so popular and very inoffensive cheese when it comes to the senses.
